“When was the last time I smiled” Mami ask herself while chatting with a women somewhere in Churachandpur. Being eloped at a very young age (before she turn 20 ) she, give the impression that she had no more hope In life. Her husband who keep on threatening her that she has an affair, external ones will sometimes hunt her with a knife around the house . “ why don’t you filed a complain? I asked, why and where? Many cases like of Mami’s are buried deep and not known even to the neighbour for the understandable reasons which include fear of retaliation, the social stigma attached ad more.

Mami along with many of us bind to what our society which is bias to hyper-masculine that tend to push the women to traditional domestic roles, where they (women) are not supposed to complain, to be submissive, to be soft, become a perfect housewife, a good cook so that you can please your husband who ever he is, an alcoholic, a drug addicts, who care.

Cruelty at home constitutes a large share in the aggregate of crimes against women, however in a place like from where I come from, these issues are not seen as crime. Neither from women nor from men’s perspectives. People here consider that this is something bound to happen. As noted above, Mami is blame for not bearing with the family and her alcoholic husband. She is expected to treat her alcoholic husband like a king.

There are a lot of women like Mami who got beaten up from dawn till mid-night.

When the going get tough, the going gets tough.
